Nowadays counterfeiting has become a very common problem for shops and for any business that takes cash as a payment method.

What is counterfeiting? Counterfeiting money is an imitation of real money, basically it means people make copies of money notes and try and pass them off as real money.

One of the ways shops and businesses check for fake money notes is to hold it up to the light and check for the watermark, this is quite time consuming and not very efficient. It is a very serious problem to accept fake money for many reasons.

• If you pay someone else with fake notes it is against the law and you could be investigated
• No insurance company covers or compensates for counterfeit losses
• Your business will lose out on a sum of money as the counterfeit money is worthless and would be considered as a pure loss.

A great security measure against counterfeit notes is to use banknote counters. Many money counters today are available with the security measure of checking if the money is real or not. As the machine is going through the wads of money counting them it also automatically checks if the money is real or not. How does it work? As each note is being scanned to be counted it is also checks them using Ultraviolet Reflection, Magnetic Thread and Infrared Spectrum Analysis and will stop if it encounters a suspect note. The large backlit LCD display is easy to read and will show a detailed error message if it encounters suspect notes. This is great because it will stop you from using the fake money notes elsewhere to avoid further problems and it stops the fake note from circling, plus it’s automatic by the machine which is counting the money anyway and so no extra time is being taken to check each individual note.

Nearly all banks and building societies use these types of money counters, and it is becoming increasingly common for the small businesses and organisation to use them as well, for it is a security measure not just for the business in question but for the whole of their society.
